Noone is underestimating their desire. But you can't just throw your jock on the floor and declare victory. There is the little matter of playing the game.

Colorful words. Do all Ascend zealots use that kind of languange. Very funny..... To your point, I don't think Cisco has ever "thrown their jock on the floor" and claimed victory. I don't think John did that. I think he made a statement that he intends to fulfill. He typically follows through and I don't see any reason why Cisco won't here as well.

AS5300 is their top of the line product, but it's not a carrier class product like the TNT. It's just competition for the MAX line.

Ascend hasn't got a carrier class product in their portfolio. They have ISP class products. There's a difference. I mean side airflow! Who thought of that one. I'm told they fixed this, but that's mechanical. Let's face it, they're learning about carrier class products while 60% of StrataCom's revenue came from IXC's. Cisco, via the aquisition knows what they need to do to penetrate this market and I think their little foray is showing returns already. True, they created a beach-head with less scalable platforms but I think they know that that's not enough. Don't you?

When in 1999 do you think they will have competition for the TNT?

Take a look at AccessPath. It's not perfect but it's a nice start and they've been chipping away at the RAS market very nicely with it. ;)
