My guess is that the extra buttons are somehow assignable to emulate keystrokes or perform scripts. This is all they really do in software anyways. I am not yet familiar enough with things like AppleScript or the Apple event mechanisms to comment further, sorry.

For that matter how many programs make use of the Scroll Lock, SysRq, Break, Pause buttons on a PC keyboard?
