I had to install a re circulation pump so hot water goes to back bathroom but it only take a few minutes to get hot water. The cold water is cycled back through the cold water lines so no water is wasted.

It's supper efficient too and my unit only cost $800. Takes up much less room in the garage too.

I am looking at building an ADU so my property is grand fathered in and I can have Natural Gas for that on-demand water heater too. Would like to install a NG fuel cell (for both units) and sell the excess electricity back to the grid.

There are some really new efficient technologies that can be 'Green' and save energy w/o doing solar and battery. A complete install for the NG fuel Cell is about $20K. You still have to buy the natural gas but can make back a large portion of the cost, selling the electricity back to the grid.

I am also looking at 'heat pump' mini splits (heating & cooling) that are supper efficient (Fujisu has a 33 SEER model). These run on electricity generated from the fuel cell in my case.

At 2015 AHR Expo, Fujitsu introduced three wall-mounted ductless split systems with efficiencies up to 33-SEER, making them the world’s most efficient mini-split available today. That was five years ago!

Unless you install multiple on-demand water heaters, you'll experience a chilly shower if you're also doing laundry or running the dishwasher - or if god forbid two showers are going at the same time.

A single on-demand heater costs more than a tank heater, and multiple on demand heaters really runs up the cost.
.

Tankless on-demand water heaters are popular in Europe due to frequent space constraints, and they tend to use less hot water than American homes. Alsoin some European nations it's customary for renters to supply their own water heater along with other built-ins American renters expect to be part of the home. - Tankless models are more efficient if you use relatively small amounts of hot water daily.

Asia and many less developed nations often feature the electrocution special where the hot water heater is built into the shower head, with the power cord running from the shower to an electrical outlet.
