Tj you are on the ground there and can best ascertain the situation.

My impression from far is that the shoe strings are being pulled up

for those playing TSLA the company quietly admitted they know nothing about batteries and now for the Chinese market they changed strategy and buy batteries from CATL non NCM batteries to lower prices
NCM stands for nickel/ cobalt/manganese and move to LFP which is made up of Lithium, Iron and Phosphate

catlbattery.com the potential new supplier

Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP)In 1996, the University of Texas (and other contributors) discovered phosphate as cathode material for rechargeable lithium batteries. Li-phosphate offers good electrochemical performance with low resistance. This is made possible with nano-scale phosphate cathode material. The key benefits are high current rating and long cycle life, besides good thermal stability, enhanced safety and tolerance if abused.

Li-phosphate is more tolerant to full charge conditions and is less stressed than other lithium-ion systems if kept at high voltage for a prolonged time. (See BU-808: How to Prolong Lithium-based Batteries). As a trade-off, the lower voltage of 3.2V/cell reduces the specific energy to less than that of Li-manganese. With most batteries, cold temperature reduces performance and elevated storage temperature shortens the service life, and Li-phosphate is no exception.

Advantages of LiFePO4 battery:

Safety: NCM Battery is very risky whereas LifePO4 battery has no risk for fire or explosion.

High temperature sustainability: LFP batteries can handle far wider variations in temperature than other chemistries. It can perform in wide range of temperature (=60°C). In the other hand, High temperature performance of NCM battery is ordinary (=45°C).

Long cycle life: The cycle life of NCM is around 1000 where for LifePO4, it is 3000+ @100% DOD.
Warranty: As cycle life is higher, so warranty is also higher for LifePO4 battery compared to NCM Battery as well. So in the long run, LifePO4 battery can be proved ideal.

Full charge condition tolerance: Li-phosphate is more tolerant to full charge conditions and is less stressed than other lithium-ion systems if kept at high voltage for a prolonged time.

Energy required to produce: LFP battery makers insist that a LFP battery requires less amount of energy to be produced compared to a NCM battery, exercising lesser impact onto its environment.
