Zakrosian,

The backlog is just the orders on the books not what is due within the next few months. Some of their customers may give them orders for the next twelve months while others might only give them the next 30 days.

Backloged orders can be pushed out and that is apparently what happened - they can also be cancelled from what I understand.

The .10 to.15 1Q99 thing is a combination of R&D and order pushout. The backlog represents contracts which bear delivery dates, some of which are beyond the 1st Q. If a 1st Q order falls through, there may not be another 1st Q order to which the unit can be redirected. But these are details. The big picture is that although the market has been treating this company like it has cancer, it is now apparent that the correct diagnosis is a mere head cold.

Regards,

John

What am I missing (need accounting help please) ? ...

From third to fourth quarter ...

Revenue went up from 57.5 million to 59 million
Margins improved from 36% to 40%
Captial spending went down from 15.3 million to 11.6 million
Yet, net income only increased from 7.05 million to 7.17 million,
and EPS only increased from .23 to .24

It seems we should have had a much larger increase in net income and EPS.

I believe Cymer is saying that overall estimates are being adjusted..

as expected. The difference in earnings is the charge they are going to take for technological advances/sales support etc...

They are beefing up their business but it will have a negative effect next Q. If we exclude the charges...the business might be sequentially stronger.

I will use the dips to purchase more for the next few months. I like the buyback....it's adds support.

Aloha

I'm also curious about how the increased backlog will result in 10% less revenue and earnings next Quarter of $0.09 to $0.14 a share. Perhap service revenue might be paid slower by Asian customers. I can't imagine Nikon, Canon, ASMLF, or AMAT having trouble making payments.

That's my interpretation of "10 to 15 cents less compared with Q4 earnings"

The share buy-back equal to 3 times today's volume is sure to sweeten the short-term outlook. It should certainly be a crowd pleaser among people on this string bitching for this.

I will certainly find out tommorrow how I feel about buying back in today. I haven't a clue which way the stock will move.

Isn't their backlog based on orders shippable in the next 12 months? If so, then that would explain why the backlog of $108 mil and revenue projections of only $50-54 million. About half of their backlog must be deliverable in Q2 and beyond.
