1) re Komatsu: Komatsu is very tight-lipped. In fact, they make Intel look like the Oprah Winfrey Show. The situation in Japanese banks right now must make their ability to raise capital extremely difficult, but how much cash they are actually holding is anyone's guess. Even huge outfits like Mitsubishi have yet to announce their capital spending for 1998.

2) Certainly Cymer is going to increase their tech lead over Komatsu. They are loaded with cash, after solid earnings on top of that blasted bond issue, and have serious R&D plans.

Komatsu's problems haven't been theoretical -- they're probably pretty close to Cymer on that front -- but rather (like the DUV stepper/scanner companies) difficulty in translating a working prototype into a mass production model that works dependably. I think it's a pretty good prediction that Cymer's 248 will increase its lead in dependability, speed, power, and ease/cost of maintenance. Also, you'd have to think this will help them in the 193 race.
