At some point, fast enough is simply fast enough, a lot of applications are reaching that point(can you say commodity?). I think the useful
lifetime of a 166 MMX chip will be extremely long. That's intense
pressure on Intel's margin.

Mark,

I think you've touched on a very important point. I have a Micron 200 MHz MMX Pentium with a 512 Pipeline Cache I bought late December. Last night I was tempted to upgrade to the 266 before my 30 day price guarantee was up so I ventured back to the showroom.

One of the whiz kids on the Micron floor told me the unit that I have is the one all the employees use and it's all I will need for the next three to five years. He then ran several graphic simulation tests on speed, including one on their newest $6500.00 super-duper it even waxes your garage 333 Pentium followed by several acronymns I didn't understand. Of course there was a difference in the 333 but it really wasn't that appreciable for the everyday uses of most folks.

This guy is brilliant and he literally talked me out of spending the extra money to upgrade, nixing the extra sale for himself (they are on commission) but gaining my devout loyalty. His comments on speed were similar to yours.

My analysis is there is a limit to how fast you can blink. Indeed Mark, there is a point where fast is fast enough for the general public. There's a future lesson here...

Onward!

George

PS-RE Post #9124

I do think having a Terry versus a Gary at the helm gives more credence to possible salvation. BTW-DAMIEN just told me he thought he's been CEO for the past several months!
