I agree with everything you said except the last statement. Masks will keep dust out of your lungs but are ineffective for much of anything else EXCEPT they do help prevent you from possibly spreading the virus to others if you have it already (though sneezes and the like). To get a truly effective anti-viral mask, one would have to resort to wearing gas mask type of equipment. Paper masks simply will not stop a virus particle.
