TOPLINE The latest in President Trump’s orbit to be infected by Covid-19, White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany and two of her deputies have tested positive for coronavirus.

“After testing negative consistently, including every day since Thursday, I tested positive for Covid-19 on Monday morning while experiencing no symptoms,” McEnany wrote on Twitter.

Two of McEnany’s deputies in the White House press shop, Chad Gilmartin and Karoline Leavitt, have also tested positive for the virus, though these staffers were reportedly diagnosed before McEnany.

McEnany had direct contact with Trump’s senior advisor Hope Hicks, who tested positive for the virus before Trump on Thursday, and was subsequently pulled off a fundraising trip to New Jersey that President Trump still attended.

However, citing negative test results, McEnany continued her duties in the White House through the rest of the week and over the weekend.

On Sunday, McEnany interacted with reporters without wearing a mask.

Despite this, McEnany wrote in a Monday statement: “No reporters, producers, or members of the press are listed as close contacts by the White House Medical Unit.”

McEnany said she is now quarantining and will continue to work remotely.

According to CNN, staffers in the upper and lower press areas of the West Wing are working remotely as a precaution.

KEY BACKGROUND

McEnany was present at the Sept. 26 nomination ceremony for President Trump’s Supreme Court pick Amy Coney Barrett, where high-profile attendees gathered mostly mask-less. Since the event, now drawing criticism as a potential contributor to the virus’s spread on Capitol Hill, at least eight others in attendance—President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Sens. Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), long-time Trump strategist Kelyanne Conway, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Notre Dame President Rev. John I. Jenkins and a White House journalist—have tested positive for Covid-19. Outside of the Rose Garden event, a slew of other people in Trump’s orbit have been infected, including the president’s campaign manager Bill Stepien, his assistant Nicholas Luna and Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel.
