<<AT&T is expected to add new multiservice ATM switches - primarily from Ascend Communications Corp., according to analysts - at up to 200 points in the network to provide additional user-to-network interfaces for frame relay, ATM and IP services.>>

WorldCom just upgraded its StrataCom FR in Europe to Ascend FR. No PR from Ascend.

Steve,

Thanks for you thoughts. Yes, ASND has made their first foray into the IXC's. I didn't consider CSCC new ATM switch in my comment - a pathetic oversight on my part.

Nonetheless, as ASND has made their first signficant foray into the IXC's CSCO's STRM products made thier first into the RBOC's which is why this announcement was so signficant. As for the timing of the announcement coming on the heels of the ASND announcement, remember this industry is very tight. Could it be that ASND simply beat CSCO out with their release? I can tell you that CSCO did not announce the US West deal in reaction to the ASND announcement. Nothing could be further from the truth.

I should also note that AT&T has far and away more CSCO/STRM equipment in their network than CSCC and it's in and functioning wonderfully. It was a painful yet fruitful learning experience for the folks at Stratacom to build out a new network. They have used this experience to their advantage. CSCC/ASND on the other hand will be just starting this effort although they do have some experience with the RBOC's - some of which will translate well. However, announcing a deal and delivering a functioning network are two different things. ASND still will need to deliver...which I'm sure they will. The only question will be how painful will it be, how long will it take, and how much of their resources will be needed to make it happen. AT&T is a very demanding customer.
