Not sure INTC buying ALTR was a good thing either. ALTR as a stand alone company might have outsourced their production earlier and been able to migrate to smaller densities faster.

AMD bought ATI technologies for their graphic processing technology and subsequently almost bankrupt the combined companies a few year a later. That was the last takeover of note for AMD.

I am not saying AMD is the same company but it is subject to the same design cycles that killed AMD
the last time - having a brief technology edge only to loose it to INTC in a longer timeframe.

INTC is currently on the losing side of that equation for now. The difference is the deep pockets and the bank account to ride it out till they get the advantage again.
