Keith,

>>Yes, but the buttons on the mouse are different from keys on the keyboard in that they generally apply to the thing to which the mouse-pointer points. Thus, for example, the 2nd mouse button is typically used to bring up a menu with actions that are only applicable to that which the mouse-pointer currently points. If there is no equivalent functional support in the application, then there is no way to map it to the mouse buttons. Moreover, how is it able to translate the mouse-pointer position into the proper instructions to send the action to the thing to which is being pointed?

My guess is that a major application might provide the ability to use the multi-button mouse if it is available. As far as user-implemented scripts or events, I have noticed that in VirtualPC you can use the Shift-click to emulate the right mouse button. A simple script might take the multi-button mouse driver event for the second button and translate this to the Shift-click required by VirtualPC. Wish I knew more about the Mac but if someone is selling a mouse with two-buttons there must be someone who can use it.

Actually here's what the ads are claiming:
"Using the included software, each button can be fully customized and programmable to any imaginable key sequence."

"Fully programmable two button mouse designed for Mac OS/8, Windows emulation software, Windows/Dos card environments and the Internet"

Your guess is as good as mine as to what this actually means.

Cheers,

Norm
