If you look through the history of Chief Justices, his tenure is one of the longer ones so far. There were a couple that were quite long. It would be interesting (assuming Biden wins and the Dems take the Senate) if Roberts were then cut a deal with Biden to retire, thus stopping a court packing exercise, while getting the court back to 5:4, but still for Conservatives. The remaining 5 conservatives of course are further right than 5:4 with Roberts being one however. But its an interesting question.

I always appreciate your posts. I was just commenting on the article. That is why I titled it rhetorical. This new supreme court is going to be an unmitigated disaster. It is going to be horrible. I am so worried and enraged about it I cannot watch the proceedings. I have worried about this exact thing for many years and posted as such right here many times. I expect Roe V Wade and the ACA to be over turned right away and also possibly gay marriage. Both Altio and Thomas want to. The Republicans give us shit judges time after time. That alone is a good reason to never vote for one. You are I are old enough to remember when abortion was illegal and to over turn Roe V Wade is going to cause so much pain and suffering to so many women; and I see nothing the congress can do about it? And 20 million losing their health insurance and 133 million will lose the safe guard to pre existing conditions. I believe Alito has a serious psychological pathology, as does Thomas, although he seems more a run of the mill sociopath. Barrett strikes me as a Jones Town "True Believer" type, a Trojan horse who cannot wait to get to the supreme court to engage her right wing theocratic dogma. What is also plausible is that she has been laying careful ground work to get to the supreme court to do "gods" work i.e. hiding her true intentions. She calls herself an originalist. As mayor Pete said, that alone disqualifies her as the constitution is a living document. As Mayor Pete says: she sounds like" a judicial activist". Cheers PS how is it working out in your new home?. We really need to win the senate and I am worried now that the dem senate guy in North Carolina has some infidelity issues.
