Prevnar 13 protects against 13 types of pneumococcal bacteria and is used in children and adults who have rare conditions like capillary leak syndrome which makes vaccination risky. . After adults with CLS are vaccinated with Prevnar, they can then be safely vaccinated with Pneumovax 23 which protects against 23 types of pneumococcal bacteria. Healthy adults receive only the Pneumovax vaccination to protect against pneumonia.
