I bought 200 shares today. This stock has a tendancy to sleep
and then move up quickly. Fundamentally, I believe that NN has
some solid products with strong worldwide sales. Data Comm magazine
picked 1998 Products of Year from four Newbridge companies not
including CrossKey. These were Advanced Computer Communications,
Cambrian Systems, TimeStep and nCipher. What I have always liked
about Newbridge is the number of small private companies that
Matthews has that add value to Newbridge's base ATM gear. They have done a good job of providing proven voice/video/data networks.
Generally I find that people do not understand ATM and get nervous
holding the stock for long periods of time. I owned NN last year
at a purchase price of $41 CDN and sold at $44. It then shot up to
around $80. For years I witnessed Newbridge's stock price move
between $44 and $88. I cannot explain why the stock has tanked lately. I thought that cisco might have made an announcement to scare off
shareholders, but I see no evidence of that. With the 3Com agreement to allow the use of NN products, I see competing technologies such
as fast ethernet as less of a threat to ATM.
