First thing you likely need to decide is do you want to use (likely supplied software) to use it as a system backup device.. or just copy what you deem important ?

I have a couple .. I just save what I want on a regular routine.. so I can use the date between notebook and desktops

You don't have to keep it connected all the time. It only needs to be attached when the backup program is running, say over the night.

Use Windows backup to do a full system backup once every 3 months.

Set up incremental backup every night. That will back up only the files that have changed since the last back up.

If there are important working folders that you want backed up all the time, set up a third backup schedule only for those folders and make sure to specify how many versions you want backed up. They can be backed up to your Google drive or to another folder on your computer.

Finally, remember to delete the old backups that you don't want once a year or so.

In my experience you can leave the back up plugged for a long time but have a backup of the back up that not plugged in
