It has long been known/acknowledge that only n95 or better masks will work to prevent the spread. This goes back to the very start when Chinese health care workers were getting sick. But I rarely see anyone wearing one of that high of standard.

Cheap masks probably lower your odds a bit when social distancing, but it is inevitable over time that you will catch it you are hanging in close proximity with a spreader.

However, the evidence is mounting that masks reduce your initial virus exposure and that there is a correlation between initial virus exposure and how sick you get. The theory being that small exposures give your immune system time to ramp up before your body is overwhelmed...
