Not everyone is a techie. Apple's Time Machine is supposed to be great b/c of its ease of use and superb user interface, Jack's experience not withstanding. There are people who've tried to implement something similar using Linux (via Dervish, I think).

For a techie, it is 2nd nature to think in terms of restoration, data loss, and storage optimization. But for my mom, I'm happy if she just backs up her system once in a while to her external hard drive and doesn't need me when she wants to get a file ;)

PS Yes, I come from a line of good genes and not only my parents are both alive, my grandmother is still walking without assistance too. My grandfather passed away a few years go.
