Alaska senator redoubles opposition to Pebble mine
Oct. 19, 2020 3:36 PM ET|About: Northern Dynasty Minerals Ltd. (NAK)|By: Carl Surran, SA News Editor

Northern Dynasty Minerals ( NAK -4.3%) slides as Alaska Senator Murkowski, a long-time skeptic of the proposed Pebble mine project, pledges further congressional action, including the use of the federal appropriations process, to protect the ecologically sensitive Bristol Bay region.

"I recognize the need for new economic development in southwest Alaska," she told the Alaska Federation of Natives annual convention, but "this is the wrong mine in the wrong place."

"I plan to build on my appropriations language from last year to make sure that the Bristol bay region remains protected," Murkowski said, making clear her opposition to the project.

An environmental group last month released secretly recorded tapes of Pebble executives pushing for approval and making remarks about Murkowski, leading to the resignation of Pebble Partnership's CEO soon after.
