Yes, I can make a metaphor any way I want. But it means fuck all if no one understands it.

The whole point of many metaphors is that they are generally accepted and carry MORE meaning than ordinary words- because you pull in a constellation of accepted connotation along with the denotative meanings of the words themselves.

If, on the other hand, you are Mrs. Malaprop and you get your metaphors all at sixes and elevenses (that a mixed metaphor- it should be sixes and sevens) then you make less sense than if you used no metaphor at all. Also, you could be a joke.

And yes, before you ask, if you were going to ask, at sixes and sevens is also an idiom- but idioms are metaphors -metaphors that are, or were, so well known they did not require context, while newer metaphors require context to make sense.
