Zip disks showed up in my company's supply closet today. Another small step closer to becoming the floppy replacement.

I use ZIP's every day. I have 3 drives, 25 discs, and I have never had a problem.

But, IF there is a problem out there I hope Iomega stands behind their product.

Intel had a problem like that years ago, I think it was with the Pentium 60, there were bad chips sent out, they finally came good for it and replaced them.

Interesting artical.

Regarding article on Iomega "clicking" problem

Milt,

I did respond to the author (anyone else who would like to do this, just click on his name). Here's my response:

Mr. Festa:

I find it unbelievable that you would write an article based on comments from an Internet news group without substantiation.

If you knew anything about the Internet, you would know that these forums are breeding ponds for malcontents and others with ulterior motives.

I defy you to do any research at all into this "problem" and then print your retraction. There are 12 MM owners of Zip drives out there. Are you telling me that this "clicking" thing is a pervasive problem. Where's your facts on this one? I'd be surprised if you're not
sued by Iomega for this irresponsible reporting.

Unbelievable. It's people like you that disgrace the good name of professional reporters.

>>To all IOM bulls:
Care to respond to this Iomega Click Problem?<<

Milt -

Yes, some Zip drives do fail. It is also true that sometimes they fail in that particular way. What's odd here is that this is being reported as if it is a brand new development and as if it is a widespread epidemic.

I once had a Zip drive which was making clicking sounds, as described. I discovered that it only did so with one particular disk. When I reformatted that disk, the problem went away, and the Zip drive is still going strong.

Believe me, Milt, my eyes are wide open. I have talked to dozens of Zip drive owners. They have all reported being happy with the drive. My own experience bears this out as well. If someone were to present some evidence that there is a widespread reliability problem with Zip drives, I would be very concerned. A few anecdotes culled from a newsgroup do not constitute convincing evidence.

Milt -- thanks for the eye opener.....yawn.....

As noted, the Iomega FAQ page, section 9 refers to Iomega's willingness to replace click dead Zip drives. I
called, their toll free 888 number, followed the menu to a warranty replacement operator who was very nice
and who took the serial number. She said it was still under warranty and promised to ship me a new drive via
UPS tomorrow, with delivery expected for Thursday.

We shall see whether they follow through as promised, however, this seems like a reasonable response. <<<

Please inform me of the tech product that has never had any failures, I'd like to research the possibility of investing in them. TIA

(yes, there are other more scathing posts at the site, but this one seemed to adress the crtical issue of what happens when you call IOM about it)

Milt,

I bet it's really frustrating to be a Syquest investor, seeing all those great Iomega Zip commercials on TV. That's gotta hurt.

exchange2000.com

I would also bet that you're glad you didn't buy stock in either one these days! <g>

Cheers!

I think we all believe that some people do experience the clicking death. However, the prevalence of the problem does not appear to be particularly high. Zips are much more reliable than 3.5" floppies, too (I know, floppies are so unreliable it's not a good comparison)

I work for a large government lab. I started buying Zip and Jaz drives for all of my folks. We must have 40 or 50 Jaz drives alone , twice that number in Zips and at least 5 times that in cartrideges. Out of this ONE problem with a Jaz drive which was replaced within a week and a set of 5 Jz disks that were part of the defective lot No problems , repeat no problems with Zip drives or disks. Sometimes , beleive it or not, authors have other motives for spreading their truth. I don't always beleive what I read.
