Jim - Re: "certain boxmakers are using Cyrix as leverage against Intel at the low end."

Most likely this is true, but I doubt that it applies to Packard Bell.

In late 1995, Packard Bell did not have the money to pay Intel $400,000,000 that they owed.

The CEO of Packard Bell made a call to Andy Grove and Grove and Intel bent over backwards - at some major impact to Intel - to convert the debt to a loan.

This prevented PB from going under - literally. Intel could have closed them down, called a press conference, leaked out stories - the usual Belt-way/Compaq method of getting what they wanted.

Instead, Intel stood behind their customer (PB) who had a bad quarter.

Now why would Packard Bell want to stick it to Intel just because a cheap floozy named Cyrix is out prostituting itself with marginally performing chips being sold at fire sale prices? Is this the way to run a business?
