i agree with you on this. the fact that surgical masks were in short
supply did not preclude the need for everyone to wear masks.
he could have advised people to make masks like we are doing now.
i always instinctively felt that everyone should wear masks - not just to
stop you from giving the virus to others, but also to protect you from getting it
from others. that notion was fought for a very long time.

Kip,

I agree that Fauci has made some mistakes but my overall take is that he tries to do what is right. In a brand new pandemic situation with a novel virus and with the present group running the country, I tend to trust what he has to say.

He stated early on that masks were not necessary for the general population

OK I'm 64.. I started at McGill (Montreal in 72) in Microbiology and immunology .. I always knew masks worked.. and posted as much quite a bit.. Fauci was in a tough position .. you need to look at the politics AND the pragmatism as in trying to ensure that front line workers are covered.. and keep the gen pop as safe as possible.. .. EXACTLY same here in Canada.. where in early March the gov announced don't worry 'we got this.. we learned from Sars LOL)' .. They showed too much hubris in that as they had obviously learned nada and like our southern brothers let the virus walk(fly) right in .. NO fly from China is a laughable farce.. :(

There was for whatever reasons (we know why) a severe shortage of PPE.. Hence social distancing ... being real.. 6ft (2M) is NOT a magic number... but it was the best overall solution .. encouraging masks now is not a failing of Mr. Fauci but a tacit admission.. and imagine if he had the hubris of Mr. Trump and did not care to be found human ? he would still be saying masks are not effective..

He was caught between a rock and a hard place...

as to Mr. Trump.. the idea that ANYONE trusts him boggles my mind...
