Mr Richard Gelfond reports
Imax has signed an agreement with Famous Players (a subsidiary of Viacom Inc)
for 10 IMAX 3D theatres to be built in new and existing Famous Players theatres
in Canada over the next five years. This agreement, which includes the company's
previously contracted joint venture location in downtown Toronto, The Paramount
Theatre, will nearly double the number of IMAX theatres in operation in Canada.
The majority of the theatres under this agreement are expected to use the IMAX
3D SR system, a smaller theatre system which is designed primarily to be located
in multiplexes, although certain of the higher trafficked locations may use the larger
IMAX 3D system. This agreement provides Famous Players with certain rights of
exclusivity in Canada. There are currently 16 IMAX theatres in operation in
Canada including five IMAX 3D theatres.
With signed contracts for 46 IMAX 3D theatres to be built in multiplexes in only
the last seven months, the company has clearly established IMAX 3D theatres as
a significant complement to the traditional exhibition business. In 1998, the
company hopes to further cultivate its existing relationships and begin to penetrate
the overseas markets.
The first IMAX locations in Famous Players theatres will include The Paramount
Theatre at Festival Hall in downtown Toronto and The Colossus in Vaughan,
Ontario. The 14 screen, 4,300 seat Paramount Theatre at Festival Hall in
downtown Toronto will open in May 1999. The 18 screen, 4,800 seat theatre,
The Colossus in Vaughan, Ontario, on the site of the former 400 Drive-In at the
intersection of Highway 400 and Highway 7, will open at the end of this year.
Imax has contracted with 12 commercial exhibitors worldwide including Cinemark
USA, Cineplex Odeon, Edwards Theatres, Empire Theatres, Famous Players,
Krikorian Premiere Theatres, Marcus Theatres Corporation, Muvico
Entertainment, Regal Cinemas, Sony Theatres, Bofiscope UFA of Germany and
Gaumont Cinemas of France.
