Most people who use historical P/E to help value a company's stock will look at earnings excluding extraordinary items such as the big charge just taken.

John,
Where are the people that do P/Es excluding charges? Where have you read or heard about this? How can that posibly be useful? With that technique a company could go bankrupt and still show a P/E. The "one time charge" is so abused as to be meaningless IMO. Its been reduced to a PR tactic. WDCs charge illustrates that very well.

Anyway, I don't even consider P/E to be a useful indicator in WDCs case. I was simply making a correction.
