Alabama, Alaska, North Carolina and Ohio each recorded more than 2,500 new infections Friday, while Tennessee reported more than 3,600 new cases. The other states hitting one-day records were Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming. They were part of a nationwide single-day increase of 83,757 cases Friday – the highest number of new infections in a single day since the pandemic began. Thousands of new infections were reported in other states that have recently been hot spots, including Wisconsin, Texas and Illinois. The U.S. leads the world in cumulative infections from the coronavirus pandemic, with nearly 8.5 million so far. The U.S. also has recorded more than 224,000 deaths from Covid-19, the disease caused by the virus--also the highest of any nation. More than 40,000 people were hospitalized in the U.S. with Covid-19 on Friday, according to data from the Covid Tracking Project . It was the third straight day with more than 40,000 Covid-19 patients in hospitals. Total deaths from the pandemic also continued to trend upward on Friday, as states reported a total of 943 Covid 19-related fatalities, according to Johns Hopkins. Over the past week, the U.S. averaged 771 deaths a day. That compares with an average of 730 deaths a day over the previous two weeks. When the seven-day average exceeds the 14-day average, that shows a rising trend in fatal cases. Through Friday, the weekly average had exceeded the 14-day average for five days straight. The U.S. case-fatality rate for those infected with the coronavirus stands at 2.6%, according to Johns Hopkins.
