Why ADSL so fast ? Hi, new to SI, first post ! Modems work through the existing central office equipment, in the "voice band", which is filtered down to a narrow frequency range, so more calls can be trunked together - this is what gives phone calls their 'tinny' sound. ADSL requires new equipment at the central office end ( and at the home end for full ADSL, but not for 'lite' ), so there is a BIG expense to install the capability - however, it then frees up the entire bandwidth of your wire for you to use.
