Motorola Expects No Mobile Crash in Japan or China

By Duncan Martell for Bloomberg News

29-JAN-98

Motorola says its cellular phone sales in China and Japan won't be harmed by Asia's economic crisis, and predicts that global population of mobile users will grow by 40% in 1998.
ÿÿÿÿÿÿ "We do not see a significant impact in China and Japan this year," said James Caile, head of marketing for Motorola's cellular subscriber group.
ÿÿÿÿÿÿ Subscribers in Asia account for less than 10% of about 200 million cellular phone subscribers worldwide. By the end of this year, Caile said the worldwide total will grow to 280 million subscribers. The "biggest business risks", he said, are in South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines.
ÿÿÿÿÿÿ Motorola also predicts that the end of 1998, 90% of all cellular subscribers will use digital service and 10% will still use analog service for their cellular phones. Only three years ago, the breakdown was nearly the exact reverse.
