Ventura 8 Ventures Forth Companies produce thousands of manuals, handbooks, and newsletters every day. Corporate desktop publishing is precisely the market Corel is aiming for with its new Ventura 8 desktop publishing program. Ventura has made a name for itself as the desktop publishing tool of choice in corporate, Windows-based offices, particularly for long documents. Version 8 of Ventura has enhancements that Corel hopes will help maintain that reputation. The biggest changes focus on enhancing Ventura's speed, adding Corel Draw&endash;like graphics tools, and streamlining and simplifying the interface. For example, Corel says Ventura 8's dockable dialog and tag windows will make it easier to use. The dockable dialog boxes sit side-by-side with the page layout so they are not in the way. The tag windows provide a consistent way to view and apply tags and can be applied to any object by dragging and dropping. The program also lets you preview formatting changes before you apply them to the whole document. Ventura's toolbars have been enhanced so the most commonly used features are prominent. The program lets you use both vector and bitmap graphics and can publish pages in HTML and construct image maps and frames. The Ventura package includes several other Corel programs, including DataBase Publisher 8, WordPerfect 8, and Photo-Paint 8. The program is expected to be available in March for $895. Users upgrading from earlier versions of Ventura and owners of QuarkXPress, Adobe PageMaker, or Adobe FrameMaker can buy the program for $199.
