Celeryroot, I think that the tape is very straight forward. Although it's not possible to say for sure if a trade is a buy or sell, the tape shows changes in bid and ask (time, size, and price) so it's possible to know the best bid and ask at the time of the trade. It's also not possible to know if some of the action is due to MMs activity, but it is possible to see each trade that is counted in the volume total (including the pre and post open action).
