Nortel is majority-owned by BCE,

Yes, BCE owns 51% of Nortel which is down from 100%.

...which in turn is partially held by the Canadian government and therefore could not legally acquire Cabletron.

Huh, where the %^$& did you get that idea. The Canadian Government generally does not own publicly traded companies; and has not had a position in BCE ever, and, to my knowledge, has never held a position in BCE's predecessor Bell Canada. AT&T once owned 48% of Bell Canada but divested its last shares in the mid 70s.

It's quite possible that people who work for the federal government may hold shares in BCE or other companies.

In any case, if an action is not permitted by Company X, why would we believe that the action becomes permitted if Company X sets up a subsidiary Y to bypass the law.

I don't think much of the rumour., ;-)

Thx Alex for that pointer. More like a revival of an old rumour.
