Microsoft has to do more than be successful with NT. It needs to have a database for that platform that is a reasonable replacement for Oracle, Sybase or Informix on a Unix box. They have a long way to go with SQL Server. Meanwhile, Oracle continues to ship NT based database servers that outperform anything Microsoft has to offer.

James,

You bring up some excellent issues. My point is that Oracle is a growing, profitable concern; customers feel more comfortable doing business with a company in good financial health. It does not matter to me whether they get their revenue from DB, Applications, Service, Consulting, NC, or widgets, nor should it matter to you; revenue is revenue, and that's what generates cash flow. Oracle is a development, marketing, and sales powerhouse, and has the economic resources to invest for the future. When sales expand, development costs drop as a percentage of revenue generating greater profit margin percentages. MSFT is a threat from the NT perspective, but Larry mentioned just this week that Oracle is gaining market share in this arena. But by no means is a slam dunk. Time will tell.
