I do not know what you mean .. compact as in deal ?

Your EC was set up to protect the smaller states no ? .. although the idea that the electors actually can go against the will of the people is another wrinkle of your founding fathers to create the mirage of a democracy :)

to protect against vigilantism in effect much like seats in a parliamentary system as ours is..

that's why plebiscites are not a standard form of democratic government but preferred by lynch mobs :)

Not a chance. You notice that the Red States refuse to put any value on popular vote, and I don't see why they would change.

The whole concept of EC is outdated and does not even serve the purpose it was created for because almost all states have passed laws to force the vote for whoever wins the the popular vote in their state. So why do you even need them if they can't really vote?

Furthermore, as far as I remember, the winner of EC was to become president and the 2nd runner was to become the VP. And we know that has not been the case for eons either (though I'd love to see Trump serve as Biden's VP <ggg>).

One of the biggest mistakes after the civil war was not repealing EC. The original purpose of EC was to afford some protection to the slave states. They got defeated and should have faced consequences (which they never did).
