You make a lot of good points there and much I agree with.

The political dynamics going forward is hard to figure at this point. Yes, the left could go too far and this tribalism worries me. And I have no idea what the right is going to do.

The moderates may need to form a new party as I expect the Democratic party to get much more liberal going forward as the kids are liberal.

But if one looks at the history of the Republican party over the last 50 years it has been very destructive to our society. This is a subject I have studied intently.

I don't know what you mean by small c conservatives. It seems to me all the conservatives have been on the same page. And I don't know if FOX and the evangelicals have captured the party as much as exploited it.

In the 50's we had the John Birch society and House of Unamerican activities and in the south right wing talk radio and evangelicals have ruled for the last 50 years e.g. the Hunt brothers were like the Koch borthers.

I think the saving grace is going to be the women taking over the Democratic party. I think they will be a moderating force and get beyond tribalism better than the men. And I like that so many minority women are running for office as dems. They are doing a good job by and large.

I think the most important thing to keep in mind is that the new Democrats coming on board are the best and brightest we have ever had, so that can't be bad.

And it is important to recognize the minorities are generally more conservative, but they have hitched their wagon to the "progressive" movement.

In Puerto Rico the progressives just had a huge win.

But i don't know how this will all play out, but there is reason for optimism.

<,

Do you differentiate surviving small c conservatives from the extremist movement that accelerated when evangelical cons, the NRA plus Limbaugh and Hannity captured the messaging? Do you think the small c conservatives are the "enemy" similar to the way many (not you) in the far left saw Hillary and even Obama?

How long do you think the coalition of Lincoln Republicans and Democrats will last before the far left will poison them by us-them rhetoric? I hear "fuck them" constantly from the Bernie-or-bust group. Ironically even Bernie (not often true of his followers) wants to work "across the aisle."

It's currently skewed to the RW but from history I fear LW demagogues as much as RW demagogues. I fear that the angry tribes currently on the left will also become intolerant of each other in battles for power. We have to get along or their will be a civil war and tragically, might-will-make- right... And the majority of people who want to continue the American experiment of peaceful pragmatism in multi-ideology governance will suffer the most.
