GW: Wau is about 140 miles from Bentiu. The operations are about 30 miles north of Bentiu. However, Wau is about 40 miles by rail from the Aweil outpost, and I believe itis waiting for an attack, but without Wau its position is untenable. From Aweil to the Unity Field is about 50 miles shorter. The SPLA will, however, link up with its forces active around Akon , located about midway between Aweil and Bentiu. Thus, the SPLA is really about a day's forced march from the fields. All the above being said, you have to understand what a crushing blow this is to the Southern Sudanese who recently joined the Khartoum Government. Called traitorsat the time, now they look foolish. If the SPLA can hold this objective, and there is still an "if" because I would think the Sudan Army would counterattack from its base at Muglad, the defeat is the worst the government has suffered from African troops since independence in 1956. Unless you have lived in Sudan, or are Sudanese, you just can't understand how incredible this victory is. The Wau garrison was beefed up to include some 8-10,000 effectives. It had beaucoup artillery, light weapons, etc. Regarding Chevron: I am convinced that Garang will invite Chevron to return to Sudan. You just don't realize how much the southerners, and the Arab=led NDA hate the Chinese for what they have done, and the Malaysians and their sappy Muslim fundamentalists who have supported Turabi. Look at the damned map. If the South wins, it also wins the oil. Tumbleweed.
