The key to understanding the reporter is his own statement.

He sounds like this Drudge report guy. If you hear it from one
or two sources it must be true. Not too much of a stretch
from how the media does "legitimate" research anyways. The idea
of having a statistical sample or at least a sampling beyond the
complaints which come to his attention is just beyond reporter
logic. Remember, you don't need any credentials or even a degree
to be a reporter. To me widespread has to be something that occurs
across the board to a significant percentage. Anything less than
5% frequency needs a sample of 100's or 1000's. He probably
has not talked to more than a dozen people. Reporter BS, par
excellance.
