One other variable,

As renewables make up a greater percent of electricity, the cost of electricity goes up (Germany is three times what the US rates are).

One of the byproducts of the move to EV's is that grid level storage is going to become viable over the next decade as well.

Environmentalists were wrong for decades about the advance of EV's and renewables. That doesn't mean that they are going to be wrong forever. The cost of solar has dropped far below what anybody was projecting a decade ago. The rest of the world is going to free ride on Germany's investments.

We aren't going to move to EV's and renewables because of environmental concerns. We are going to move there because of economics.
