OK, Greeks love to gamble!

Pick #1. (MTZ) MasTec builds telecommunications networks for phone and cable TV companies; also, there isn't a telephone pole in Dade County that wasn't "carefully" installed by them. The company is quickly penetrating the lucrative Latin American market, and have acquired Sintel (Telefonica de Espana) BellSouth and T de E make up 50% of the sales. The founder, Jorge L. Mas Canosa, recently passed, and this probably accounted for most of the stocks drop from 55 to 20 over the last few months. Recently, his son purchased an additional 100,000 shares, and the last three times he has traded, the stock has reacted accordingly by huge margins. My father is happy he bought 2,000 shares at 21 1/2 not long ago.

Pick #2. Staples is ready to roll into South Florida and over the Office Depot. They have a great mail order oprogram- modeled after Viking, and they sell office products, etc. They are planning a fairly aggressive expansion, with joint ventures in England and Germany. Under the leadership of Tommy Stemberg, the company is poised to become the Home Depot of the office products world.

An honorable mention goes to another South Florida company called The Sports Authority. My neighbor, an ex- Raider (Ted Hendricks)- most probably don't remember the guy they called the stork- and I were talking about it recently. They also follow the Home Depot model, and have Jack Kemp and Nick Buonoconi sitting on the board. Two great guys to have calling the plays!
