Your math is a little off and exponential growth is neither inevitable nor persistent. 12m reported with 20% reported implies 60m cases

R0 estimated in the early weeks of the disease was 3 or more, which means herd immunity when 2/3 have been infected IF all those who recover gain 100% immunity that doesn't fade. 2/3 of 330m is 220; multiply that by whatever estimate of mortality rate you desire to determine the cost in lives.

Cases don't have to continue to increase. New York showed the rise could be checked. Even if people either abandon or never start trying to affect the rate of transmission, the rate of growth will slow as herd immunity is approached.

We won't have herd immunity by the end of February without vaccines. From what I've heard and read about them, they will be making a big difference by then.
