A fuel cell has 3 parts; Anode catalyst, Cathode catalyst, and Electrolyte substance.

Anode catalyst is usually platinum powder.

There ar several variants of fuel-cells some include nickel others buckyballs others copper alloys - platinum is not a requested even that Ballard started with Platinum 36 years ago.

It can also be operated in the reverse manner as a high temperature steam electrolyser to produce hydrogen.
