Putin would have also wanted US energy independence and peace in the middle east driving oil to it's lowest levels in decades. A brilliant tactic for a country so dependent on crude.

If that were true, then Putin wanted the United States to have record low unemployment, a booming economy, the strongest military on earth, to be feared and respected again by other countries, and China brought to its knees after stealing our artificial intelligence for so many years... this list goes on... THE FIRST THREE WERE ALSO TRUE UNDER OBAMA and brought there from a very low level.....and that momentum carried thru under Trump.....I believe in the fear factor but not the respect part or China being brought to its knees....the trade war equally hurt us and left the economy weakened when covid 19 hit
