OREGON’S LATINO LEADERS CONDEMN LAWSUIT AGAINST OREGON BLACK CARES FUND

November 22, 2020

The vast majority of Latino Leaders have stepped up to stand in solidarity with Black Oregonian’s in support of the Oregon Black Cares funds for individuals, small businesses, and organizations to serve those communities through the pandemic which has hit black and indigenous communities of color the hardest. Oregon’s most prominent Latino, Latina, Latinx and Latine leaders condemn the recent lawsuit filed by Maria Garcia, owner of Revolucion Coffee, and former candidate for Multnomah County Commissioner. [ see article here]

The actions of Maria Garcia are anti-black, and do not represent the sentiment of Latinos - some of whom also identify as black - and who believe these investments in the Black community are vital to saving lives during the pandemic and provide the very needed financial support during these difficult times. Black and Latino business have been hit hard by the pandemic, and we applaud the actions of Governor Brown to create community specific funds - because we know from first hand experience - that BIPOC communities have many barriers in accessing services when they aren’t culturally specific.

No matter where we come from or what our color is, most of us work hard for our families. But today dog whistle political organizations are convincing people that it's “us” vs. “them”... while they sit back, they would have us fight over crumbs. Organizations like the Center for Individual Rights, preach racially divisive messages, while advocating for cuts in our state budgets during a pandemic. Then they turn around and use Latino business owners as tokens to point fingers at black working families for these hard times. This is not only disgraceful, and misdirected aggression, and doesn’t align with our Latino community values.

We need to join together with people from all walks of life to fight for our future, and advocate for relief during COVID-19 for Black and Latino communities - not attack the little that some communities have. We demand Maria Garcia drop the lawsuit immediately, and make a public apology to black leaders that advocated tirelessly to deliver much needed relief to a community that has been left behind historically and systematically by Oregon’s institutions.

Latinos stand up for the Black Cares Fund, and we will not allow attacks on our diverse communities. We celebrate the Black Cares Fund, and encourage Oregon lawmakers to continue funding the Black Cares Fund if/when a second federal stimulus arrives to make up for years chronic disinvestment in this important community.

Together and by your side,

FatRump once again fails in a spectacular manner

Trump’s Operation Warp Speed promised a flood of covid vaccines. Instead, states are expecting a trickle.
