In about six-nine months, the market will focus on the Merced opportunities

What would happen if analysts start to say that Intel has no control on the Merced schedule since HP has full control over this chip? If you put too much emphasis on Merced importance towards Intel, any negative reports on Merced, such as delay, bugs, poor performance (comparing to Cyrix M3) or no M$ OS support, etc. would crash INTC.

The strength of Intel is the marketing, not the technology leadership. The sales makes Intel great!

Right. This article is full of old news. A lower tax rate and income from other products ect. is hardly cooking the books. The comments about ending inventory are valid but were taken in consideration by analysts after the earnings release. Intel has been going up this week partly because of the following: Pentium 11 sales have been taking off in the last few weeks since the price cuts - Intel makes money on volume and therefore yield. It has been shown since Christmas that the sub-$1000 PC sales are not cannibalizing other markets and that the box makers can make a profit on them - Intel has the majority of sales in that area. Also sales of $2000 systems were very strong. Intel is offering smaller, more powerful processors at a faster rate than any competitors, Merced is on target, Intel is aggresively pursuing other markets (internet apps), the Compaq DEC merger is good for Wintel, and sales in Europe, Latin America and the Middle East are still great compensating for SE Asia.
