I agree we read into the LU PR that they are using 5 Gb/s and that may not be the case. If the SONET spec allows any multiple then I stand corrected but as you mention no one is using these other rates as you also point out for terrestrial links. So I'll wait to see more information on LU's setup before I make further comments.

As for the submarine links, they use a completely different type of transmission which may or may not conform to SONET standards. Since they are dedicated point to point links it's less important that they conform to standards.

LU has a reputation for setting their own custom standards and then building systems to those standards. In effect, thumbing their noses at the standards committee's.
