Bet you $10,000 Donald Trump will lose, says ex-fixer Michael Cohen

The president’s former lawyer has put money on his ‘incompetent’ boss being kicked out of the White House

Donald Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen, says he has bet $10,000 on him losing the presidential election, warning that Britain should “pray” for Joe Biden to win the race for the White House.

In an interview, Cohen warned that Boris Johnson and his government will get no special treatment from Trump even if he does triumph again and predicted that the president will be prepared to incite violence among militia groups to cling on to power.

Cohen was Trump’s fixer and close confidant before he admitted eight counts of campaign finance violation in 2018, including tax fraud and bank fraud. He has publicly admitted paying hush money, on Trump’s orders, to porn star Stormy Daniels, who says she had an affair with the president.

Speaking from his home in New York, where he is under house arrest, Cohen said he got odds of 1-2 from Guesser, the political betting website, on a Trump defeat.

“I am so certain that Donald Trump is going to lose the election that I have placed a $10,000 wager,” Cohen said, adding that he will give his winnings and stake to the American Civil Liberties Union, which helped secure his release from jail in July.

“All the metrics point in that direction. He’s lost the silent majority due to his incompetence and his arrogance in the handling of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“In 2016 Hillary Clinton was a flawed candidate and he was able to convince a silent majority that as a businessman he could negotiate great deals for the United States and would be indebted to no one because he is not a politician.

“But he is a politician with an abysmal record. People like myself who proactively disclosed information about President Trump have helped to open the eyes of Americans as they go to the ballot box.”

Cohen knew Trump well for 20 years, acting as his backroom fixer. His advice to foreign governments is simple: “Pray that the Biden-Harris ticket wins.”

“I believe the Biden administration will re-engage with our foreign allies in a manner that benefits not just America but the world as a whole. Trump has denigrated our allies and embraced our adversaries.”

Cohen says it would be naive of Johnson or his cabinet colleagues to expect a favourable trade deal from Trump if he secures a second term.

“There are some who say he has a good relationship with Mr Johnson. My response would be that Donald Trump cares for no one or anything other than himself.

“If Trump feels correctly or incorrectly that he can take advantage of England and Mr Johnson, he will do so and gladly. That’s just who he is. He has already demonstrated this with the leaders of other allied countries time and again.”

That impulse, Cohen believes, will also mean Trump will refuse to quit. “He will do anything he can to remain in power. There will never be a peaceful transition of power by Donald Trump. He will contest the results, claiming that the election has been stolen from him, and will seek every legal redress to try to cling to power.

“He must do this because he knows that, should he lose, there will be a multitude of litigation against him, his family and his business enterprises that will both financially destroy him and subject him to potential incarceration.”

Cohen says this could mean Trump tries to pardon himself. “Donald Trump will do anything in order to protect himself, even at the expense of his children and other loyal followers.”

And he predicts there could be violence. “It is of great concern to many in the intelligence community that these mini-militia groups, who he speaks directly to in code, will cause harm, or will attempt to cause harm post the election. Many in the intelligence community believe that November 4 [the day after election day] to January 20 [inauguration day] will be a very dangerous time in the United States.”

Asked if he is concerned for his own safety, Cohen says: “I am.” What about his security arrangements? “I’d rather not discuss that, for obvious reasons,” he says.
