paychex briefly mentioned as a fave of erik gustafson too, manager of stein roe young investor and growth stock funds.

via a morningstar interview:

"We've talked about large companies. What are some of the smaller companies you like?

A great name is Paychex. It is a provider of payroll-processing services to small business. The one we all know is Automatic Data Processing, which serves the GEs of the world. Paychex focuses on business with less than 10 employees. It really has a franchise in that business, but it only has about a 4% market share, so it is extremely underpenetrated. Paychex continues to roll out new services. They've rolled out a tax-pay service, a 401(k) service, and all of these items are things small-business owners don't want to worry about--they want to pay someone to do it for them. So I think Paychex has a very bright future. And it has a great management team led by Tom Golisano."

here's the 3q release. street liked it, albeit, briefly: busted thru another 52-week high yesterday to hit $56, but closed down 1-3/8.

revenue, net income, and eps up 24%, 37%, and 33%, respectively, over 3q last year. in addition, "Expansion of the Company's HRS-PEO client bases continues to be strong with 5,200 clients taking advantage of the Company's 401(k) recordkeeping services, an increase of 100% over February 28, 1997, and 18,200 PEO worksite employees, an increase of 52% over February 28, 1997."

is anyone out there?

* PAYCHEX INC reported 3Q EPS of $0.24 vs $0.18 on revenues of
$271.3 mln vs $195.5 mln last year. Analysts' mean estimates were
$0.23, according to First Call. (Reuters 08:46 AM ET 03/17/98)
