A. Sharez, the question is where in the market is HLIT? HLIT buys photonic lasers from UNPH. But UNPH's strength comes from DWDM lasers is is selling to CIEN. This is where the bandwidth bottleneck is currently being addressed. CIEN is selling to Worldcom, and Sprint, for the long haul backbone bandwidth problem. They also make EDFA's for HLIT,I believe. SDLI has languished with HLIT,SDLI also makes EDFA's.
Harmonic is trying to be a telecom networker, mainly for cable, but soon to be for LMDS. Their claim to fame was their Yag Lasers, externally modulated, continous. They are trying to leverage their photonic expertise into a full fledged networking behemouth, like TLAB,or COMS.
Well, right now Com21-3COM's COMunity is selling like hot cakes to cable companies. Their great advantage is in their ATM expertise, and thus, ability for voice, video and data in an integrated system.
Now, Toshiba has a stranglehold on TWX business. TCI is languishing in no man's land, looking for a way out of their problems,by having someone else foot the bill,ANTC.
Right now, COMS is ahead of everyone.BAY has a decent system, with their LANcity line, and Toshiba is close behind. HLIT is in the top five CMTS companies, and but they do not produce the cable modems, they are focused on the headend, and integration side. Hence they partner with Panasonic, and Daiwoo,to sell compatable modems to the mass markets. They provide interoperability with Toshiba has the Western Cable show. They have proven that they can integrate different silicon from the likes of Libit,Broadcom, and STII,a real coup.
So where do they stand right now. Well behind NLV in digital transmission systems, behind COMS,and BAY in cable modem termination systems, and behind Toshiba in cable system integration. But how far behind are they from thse companies? Not much, their acquistion of New Media vaulted them up to almost even with NLV. Their alliance with Panasonic and Daiwoo, give them access to mass markets for compatable cable modems. Do they have any advantages over the bigger companies? Well it all comes down to cost, and reliability of their products.
But the future is bright this year, and HLIT is on the cusp of greatness. Management may be the key now,can they execute. Can they come up with a system that integrates voice and data? Can they come up with a complete LMDS system at the right time? Do they have something so compelling everyone will come running to their door? They have tremendous possibilities in front of them, and are in a elite league of companies for cable and HFC systems. TIme will tell,UNPH has also hyped themselves and had the luck of CIEN on their side. The CEO has said he wants to be the lord of the photon. Lets hope HLIT becomes the King of the HFC hill.

A. Sharez,
2 good articles worth reading,in those long hours waiting for some news from HLIT.

techweb.com

and the other one is pretty interesting also.
telecoms-mag.com

I haven't finished them yet,but very interesting.

A. Sharez,
another good article about fiber optic advances.
americasnetwork.com

Read on friend, a lot fo these things are related to what HLIT's R&D facility must be doing.

A. Sharez,
another very good article, explaining Daewoo, and Harmonic's alliance. And where Daewoo comes into the picture. Also interesting that HLIT is in line for the new Rockwell cable modem chip sets due out in May.
On another note, take a look at a competitor with a good system, and engineering, and some key customers, named Hybrid Networks. Stock was an IPO in November at 14,zoomed into the 20's,now it is in the 4's. At least we are getting a little more respect than that, and forming many strategic alliances.
multichannel.com

Under the hood, Daewoo is using chips from Rockwell and Stanford Telecom.

Trials with cable operators will begin shortly, in conjunction with Daewoo's headend-product partner, Harmonic, Park said.

On the chip side, Rockwell joins Broadcom Corp., Libit Signal Processing and Stanford Telecom in the race to equip boards under the cable-modem chassis.

Harmonic is interoperable with all of these chip sets.
