Safety and hedging positions take shape
Dow -378.66 at 29800.33, Nasdaq -214.66 at 12540.89, S&P -66.88 at 3642.54
Losses have accelerated with the S&P 500 trading at session lows with a 1.9% decline. Recall, last Friday each of the major indices set fresh all-time highs before embarking on a steady decline.

Investors are seeking safety in longer-dated Treasuries and assuming hedging protection against further equity weakness. Currently, the 10-yr yield is down three basis points to 0.92% although it was down at 0.88% earlier, while the CBOE Volatility Index has spiked 30.3% to 28.11.

Shares of Tesla (TSLA 659.24, -35.65, -5.1%), the newest S&P 500 company, are trading lower by 5% as investor take profits. Tesla accounts for about 1.68% of the S&P 500's market capitalization.
