The latest Popular Science (FEB 98 pg 25)ran a small article regarding the latest automotive diesels from Europe (GM-Opel Division, Chrysler,and Audi)using direct injection with a new fuel rail that reduces the cost of injection. The article mentions that the new technology gets 20% improvement in fuel efficiency over the already thrifty diesels now prevalent in Europe. The article cites several factors: high compression ratios that are accompanied by high expansion ratios; the air-fuel ratio is very lean compared with typical gas engines; and the energy content of diesel fuel is higher than that of gasoline.

It also went on to mention that research is being undertaken by the Federal partnership for New Generation Vehicles is aimed mainly at establishing whether or not emissions for direct-injection diesels can be improved. Al Gore is somewhere involved in this.

My speculation is that any of these or other auto manufacturers can and probably will get involved with BAAT once they are satisfied that this is not a fly in the pan technology. The auto boys are not idly standing by. I imagine that they are well aware of the Dolphin engine and are already trying to experiment with and or replicate the technology or parts of it in their skunk rooms. Remember, an idea cannot be stuffed back in the bottle once it is uttered. BAAT has a good chance of running with this technology if something happens fast.... because if it works everyone will want it and if they cannot get it for free (design a copy) then they will buy it. The automobile industry has a habit of stealing technology and then forcing the inventor to sue for years to get their due. BAAT does not have patents, only trade secrets. At this time this is probably a very wise move because a battalion of lawyers (on retainer with deep pocket automakers) can destroy the integrity and out manipulate the claims of patents with a bombardment of competing patent applications and claims. BAAT does not have the financial resources to get sucked into this defending their patent.

Regarding the Yanmar engine... it is a good engine and those that know diesels know that it is a highly reliable and fuel efficent engine that is quiet (compared to others) and is built to last. It is heavily used in the marine industry where you cannot afford to have your engine die out on you. The diesel engines for sale here in the states pass emissions, but they are basically older generations to what you can buy elsewhere for the small automobile. Americans do not need or are willing to pay extra for slightly more efficient diesels because our fuel cost is lower. The amortized savings is not as great here as in Japan or Europe where fuel is relatively more expensive.

I agree with you that a side by side test with another Geo Metro outfitted with a plain vanilla Yanmar would add credibility. Previous posts have made the same suggestion and it is valid.

Thanks for the informative article in the Washington Post. I encourage any article relating to diesel engines be brought to our attention. Information is knowledge. Lets hope BAAT can outrun Detroit in this race. Trust me, they have not ignored what BAAT is doing. Industrial espionage in the auto industry probably ranks just below what occurs in the defense industry. It is a reality-they'll buy what they cannot steal or develop themselves in a timely fashion.

A side point. I hope BAAT has good security and I am not just referring to physical security.
