Re: H. Rider Haggard......;-}

mnmuench,

H. Rider Haggard's "She" -- quite a study in the Victorian Man's growing fear of Woman at the "fin de siĆ cle". After all... hmmmm... women wanted to ride bicycles despite the protests of doctors and scholars who said it was outrageous and unhealthy. And they were going to universities...and heaven forbid...some were becoming doctors....and...oooooohhhh...they even wanted the power to vote!!! "She" embodies all of the dangers of the female species running rampant in the world... a dominant woman with a host of male servants who quake in her presence...ruling over a kingdom, or shall we say "queendom" in the heart of Africa... that place of darkness and perversity (LOL!). But watch out!! ...despite her seeming innocence, "She" is Eve and the Serpent in one... with her long dark hair, slithering movement, and golden snake girdle about her waist.... fantastic imagery and hilarious similies...;-} I don't want to ruin the ending for you...so I won't tell you how typically "Victorian" this book is. However, it is great stuff for cultural studies and discourse analysis... LOL!!!

Croc ;-}

Hi mnuench:

I still believe Ray Bradbury is the best sci-fi writer ever born, I don't care how many young upstarts profess to be. I cut my teeth on his stories (an exaggeration, I wasn't that gifted as a baby) I know my mother would disagree, I hope. hehehe

I recall many fond memories of lying on my bed, simply entralled by his accounts of life on distant planets. I voraciously gobbled up everything I could find to read in these long past days.
